Microsoft’s third round of layoffs hits workers in supply chain, cloud, IoT Biz: Report
Microsoft has implemented a third round of layoffs that affected employees in roles related to supply chain, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
According to CRN, the third wave of layoffs is part of the 10,000 job cuts Microsoft announced earlier this year.
The layoffs concerned different levels, functions, teams and geographies, according to the report, the company is quoted.
In Washington state, the tech giant recently laid off 689 employees, according to records.
In February, Microsoft notified the state of Washington that 617 employees were being laid off.
That same month, the company notified the state of California that 108 workers were being laid off.
“In January, Microsoft notified the state of Washington that 878 employees were being laid off, bringing the total number of employees laid off in the state to 2,184,” the report states.
According to a LinkedIn message from a Microsoft employee, the company has ended its artificial intelligence-powered automation project Project Bonsai and fired the team.
Another chief product manager, who spent more than 18 years at Microsoft and led a team of product managers in Supply Chain Engineering, part of Microsoft’s cloud and artificial intelligence group, wrote on LinkedIn that “a significant portion of my team and I were let go.”
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella announced in January that the company is “making changes that will result in a reduction of 10,000 jobs in our total workforce by the end of Q3 23 (third quarter).”
Microsoft currently has more than 220,000 employees, and the layoffs affected about five percent of its workforce.
